Shelling Peas

I want her to play with food. Be conscious of taste, shape, smell, texture. I want her to always be intrigued by the new. By the odd. By the food that we might not be used to. I love watching her face when she tries new things. The sour-ness of lemon. The saltiness of soya sauce.

The magic of shelling peas, the run of the finger down the seam, the sweet crack of the pod then the beauty of the peas running down along. Then gently putting your finger under a pea and they all pop up, pop up, pop up. Her face every time she opened one. The joy. The smile. The “look mama!”. It is so wonderous.

Today we shelled peas. She sat with Zsa Zsa and they shelled a bag of peas. I heard laughter, excitement and wonder and it was just so beautiful. It was a full 40 minutes of peas exploding on the floor, giggles trying to pick them up. And then we spent the rest of the day talking about peas. It’s magical seeing the world through a little persons eyes. Seeing the world as if there was no bad, no sad, no mad. We might have no furniture but we have laughter and wonder and it’s pretty damn good.
